Influencer fake followers checker: the four free tools

The free influencer fake followers checkers worth running are HypeAuditor's, Modash's, Heepsy's and Collabstr's. Each reports its own measure, and running all four on one creator costs $0.

For a creator's US share, Modash's page lists audience location by country and a gender split; HypeAuditor's free checker returns only the score, follower count and engagement rate.

Why the four checkers give different numbers

Each checker uses its own measure. HypeAuditor's Audience Quality Score (AQS) is its own 1 to 100 score for an Instagram account's audience quality. Modash's fake follower rate is the combined share of suspicious accounts and bots in a sample of followers, each classified as a real person, mass follower, influencer, suspicious account or bot. Heepsy reports estimated fake followers and Collabstr a share of suspicious followers.

So one creator can show four different numbers, and a gap between two checkers is a reason to look closer. A share above zero is no proof either. HypeAuditor says every Instagram account collects some suspicious followers, even without buying any, and Collabstr says all influencers have some fake followers.

Sign-up, account size and locked figures

HypeAuditor's Instagram checker works on any account with at least 1K followers, so it cannot score a smaller one. Its tool page shows "Sign up for free" banners and promises an instant evaluation.

Modash's page says the check needs no sign-up and shows a prompt to start a free trial to unlock some figures. Heepsy needs no sign-up, reads public data only and asks for a Heepsy account to show some metrics, including audience authenticity. Collabstr says searching is free with no subscriptions, contracts or hidden fees. Heepsy and Collabstr also run free TikTok checkers, and Upfluence has a free Instagram checker.

When a free fake follower check is not enough

A paid HypeAuditor report splits an Instagram audience into Real People, Influencers, Mass Followers and Suspicious accounts. HypeAuditor says most reports arrive within 1 to 2 hours, and rare ones take up to 24 hours. Its blog says Basic starts at $299 a month when billed annually, and its comparison page lists 500 creator analyses a month on Basic.

Heepsy's pricing page lists an audience authenticity filter from Plus, $149 a month billed annually. Collabstr Pro, $249 a month billed annually, includes 20 audience reports a month. HypeAuditor says no analytical model can guarantee 100% accuracy and that some of its metrics are estimates. Pick Modash for a no-sign-up check with country and gender, and Heepsy or Collabstr for a second opinion on Instagram.

The steps are in how to check if an influencer has fake followers. The HypeAuditor fake follower checker guide covers HypeAuditor's tool, and free influencer analytics tools lists the other free routes.
