How to spot fake influencers on TikTok: five checks

To spot a fake influencer on TikTok, run five checks before you pay: engagement against TikTok norms, the follower growth graph, the accounts behind recent comments, a sample of followers and a free TikTok checker. The same checks answer how to tell whether a TikTok influencer is real.

  1. Compare engagement with TikTok norms, which HypeAuditor says run higher than Instagram's.
  2. Read the follower growth graph in an analytics report. A jump can also mean one post reached TikTok's Recommendations section, per HypeAuditor's help center.
  3. Open the accounts behind recent comments.
  4. Open a sample of followers.
  5. Run a free TikTok checker and read its score.

TikTok engagement runs higher than Instagram's

HypeAuditor's TikTok audit page says engagement rates on TikTok are significantly higher than Instagram's. It calls an unusually low rate on a micro-influencer, for example under 5 percent, suspicious.

HypeAuditor's TikTok pages give more than one yardstick, and its TikTok calculator page still quotes a 2020 average. Read each figure as that page's own line, not a rule. The same creator can also show a different rate in another vendor's tool; the influencer engagement rate benchmarks guide compares the formulas.

What HypeAuditor's free TikTok checker shows

HypeAuditor's free TikTok fake follower checker takes a TikTok username and shows the account's AQS, follower size, engagement rate and the total videos posted. AQS is HypeAuditor's score, called Audience Quality Score on Instagram. Its TikTok pages use Account Quality Score, Account QS and Average Quality Score, and its help center describes the TikTok score as a quick first-pass filter.

HypeAuditor's pages disagree on the bands. The checker page says accounts rated 40 points or lower are considered bad, while the TikTok audit page rates 0 to 20 as bad and 20 to 40 as fair. Use the score to pick whom to look at more closely, not to settle a decision.

TikTok accounts a report cannot score

HypeAuditor's help center lists what a TikTok account needs to be analyzed: at least 3 videos published in the last 90 days. HypeAuditor focuses on accounts with more than 1,000 followers and does not guarantee a report for every profile, so a new or quiet account may get no score.

When a score is missing, fall back on checks three and four: open the accounts behind recent comments and a sample of followers. HypeAuditor's help center describes suspicious TikTok accounts as accounts that do not look like real people. Modash's fake follower page, written for Instagram, lists more traits of a fake account, from a missing profile image to a gibberish username.

Modash's TikTok database and the next step

Modash's creator database lists TikTok creators with over 1K followers, and its free fake follower checker page is titled for Instagram. Heepsy and Collabstr each offer a free TikTok checker. Heepsy's reads a public handle with no sign-up and locks audience authenticity and posting habits behind a Heepsy account.

HypeAuditor's free TikTok checker returns its score in one step, and the HypeAuditor fake follower checker guide covers each field it shows. A brand paying one or two TikTok creators a year can stop at the manual checks and two free checkers. A team vetting TikTok creators every month is the buyer for reports.

For the Instagram-first checklist, see how to spot fake influencers. The TikTok checker is free, and HypeAuditor's free trial is arranged through its sales team; ask what it covers.
